Ben, United States
To Diabetes,
When I was diagnosed on April 25, 2022, I had no idea how much my life was about to change. Almost overnight, I had to take on responsibilities and think about things that most people my age never have to worry about.
Living with you has forced me to grow up faster, become more independent, and develop a stronger work ethic. You've also taught me to be humble. No matter how prepared I am or how well I manage everything, there are still days when things don't go my way. I've learned to be patient, adjust, and keep moving forward.
Managing diabetes while playing Division I water polo at USC hasn't always been easy. Between practices, games, school, and everyday life, there are plenty of challenges that people don't see. But I've never wanted diabetes to be an excuse or something that holds me back from doing what I love.
One thing I didn't expect was the people I would meet along the way. Being part of the diabetes community has given me the opportunity to connect with people who understand what living with Type 1 is like, and it's something I've come to really appreciate.
I wouldn't say I'm grateful to have diabetes, but I am grateful for the lessons I've learned, the people I've met, and the way I've grown because of it.
Diabetes has changed the way I live, but it hasn't changed what I want to accomplish.
Ben
