Danilo, United States
Hey Diabetes,
When I found out about you, I was seven years old. The first thing I asked was, “Will I still be able to play baseball?” I was scared that you might take away something I loved. I’m 12 now, and I’m still playing. That’s a win I’m proud of. Some days are harder than others, but I keep showing up for my team and doing what I love. Baseball helps me feel like myself, especially on days when dealing with you feels like a lot. Here’s something I wish you knew about me: I’m more than diabetes. I’m a baseball player, a brother, a son, and a friend. I have good days and tough days, just like anybody else. I don’t do this alone. My mom, my dad, and my two sisters are always there for me. My friends are there too. They help me feel supported and remind me that I can still be a regular kid. You have taught me something I didn’t expect, I’m stronger than I thought. Strength doesn’t mean I never get frustrated or scared. Sometimes it means asking for help. Sometimes it means taking care of myself and then getting back out on the field. I’m not going to pretend I like having you. I wish you weren’t part of my life. I wouldn’t have chosen you. But you’re only one part of my story. Baseball, my family, my friends, and all the things I still want to do are part of it too.
Sincerely,
Danilo
